This film was the first to be filmed in Cinemascope, though not the first released (that was THE ROBE).
Lauren Bacall, Betty Grable and Marilyn Monroe play three models, Schatze Page, Loco Dempsey and Pola Debevoise, who rent an expensive Manhattan penthouse apartment and scheme (led by Bacall’s character) to ensnare rich husbands for themselves (the millionaires of the title).
Monroe is the near-sighted, bumbling, bespectacled blonde - occasionally missing doors and bumping into walls or tripping over - and is wooed by an international playboy, though ends up settling for a tax-dodging fugitive she meets on a plane, who sees her reading her book upside down and thus knows she should be wearing glasses. When she puts them on, however, he says they make her look better! It transpires that she has got on the wrong plane by mistake, and - further conscience - it turns out he owns the girls’ apartment!
Grable goes off for a weekend in the mountains with a married executive intending to get to know him, but she gets the measles and falls instead for a poor, but handsome, forest ranger.
Bacall very nearly lands an elderly millionaire, but has a sudden attack of conscience at their wedding and opts instead for a supposedly poor “gas pump jockey” who has been pursuing her. As luck would have it though - as it turns out - he is one of the richest men in New York!
